A Montessori Summer
As the school year winds down, we wish you a peaceful, joy-filled summer. This season offers a beautiful opportunity to pause—time to rest, reconnect, and renew. It’s also a chance to gently weave Montessori principles into your family rhythm at home.
At the heart of Montessori is a deep respect for the child and trust in their natural desire to learn. In the elementary years, this comes to life through the spiral curriculum and cosmic education—approaches that honor the child’s innate curiosity and love of interconnected learning. At home, this can look like following your child’s interests, supporting big questions, and offering tools for meaningful exploration.
For older children, a prepared environment might mean having materials available for independent research or creative projects—art supplies, nonfiction books, maps, or simple tools for inquiry. For younger ones, look for ways to support growing independence: a low stool at the sink, a spot for shoes and jackets, or child-accessible kitchen tools.
Summer also invites us to slow down and see the world through our child’s eyes. When we do, we notice more. We wonder more. And we connect more.
Here are a few gentle ideas to carry with you this season:
Take your time. Be outside. Notice. Wonder. Just be. Time in nature especially offers space for presence and peace.
Explore together. Whether it’s a new trail or a familiar spot seen in a new way, shared discovery builds connection.
Read together every day. Let it be natural and enjoyable—read aloud, take turns, or simply read side by side. Create cozy corners for reading, make library visits a regular adventure, or try audiobooks and podcasts to spark interest.
Every summer looks a little different. One year, we made a list of our favorite topics together and planned a few projects around those interests. Another year, we shaped our days around a gentle rhythm—library visits, hikes, time to play and rest. Some summers, we’ve let the days unfold without much of a plan.
There’s no one right way. Your child, your schedule, your energy—all of it matters. Whether your summer is mapped out or more free-flowing, a simple, predictable rhythm can offer comfort and clarity.
PS: We have something special planned for you this summer… An opportunity to re-align with your values and priorities, in order to show up as the prepared adult your child needs. Stay tuned for more details coming soon!
